Abstract

CMC composites fabricated by the liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) process show some superior properties with respect to abrasive resistance and dimensional stability. Different microstructures and phase compositions of these C/C-SiC composites can be achieved by modifying the fibre surfaces or by varying the fibre preform architecture. The resulting mechanical and physical properties can be tailored to the specific requirements of different applications, for example thermal protection systems (TPS), brake disks or pads and zero-expansion structures like telescopes or calibration plates.
