Research of DLR in Fluid Mechanics is performed in different locations in Germany. Since about nearly 100 years the center for classical Fluid Mechanics is Göttingen, founded by Ludwieg Prandtl. Fluid Mechanics problems oriented towards airplanes and space vehicles are also treated in the institute for Design Aerodynamics in Braunschweig. Some other activities in the field of Atmosphe-ric Fluid Meachanics are concentrated in Southern Germany (Oberpfaffenhofen) in the Institute for Atmospheric Research. Special problems of compressors and combustion in general are solved in the Institute for Turbomachinery in Co-logne. The main areas in research in the different locations are research in threedimen-sional unsteady flow fields including problems of turbulence, separation and vortical flow. These problems are attacked and solved by the help of modern experimental techniques and also numerical methods. About the most recent research activities information is provided in the lecture.
