Abstract
The investigation of wake vortices is a traditional subject of aerodynmics. A continuous interest arises from general safety aspects of aircraft whereas in the past years the need to reduce the safety distance between following aircraft stimulated new investigations. This paper shall summarize experimental aspects of work carried out in this field employing modern optical techniques for the measurement of instantaneous flow velocity fields. It will be shown that the use of a modern mobile particle image velocimetry (PIV) system in combination with advanced evaluation and post processing techniques allows much faster progress in such a complex field of high technological (and economical) interest.
