A new optical method for determining the density within a flow field will be introduced. The method that has been called BOOT is particularly simple. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of BOOT a supersonic free jet exiting a planar nozzle has been observed both by BOOT and by a shadowgraph method. The results obtained with both methods will be compared. In the example shown the exit Mach number of the jet is about M = 2.5 and the stagnation temperature was chosen such that the temperature in the jet matches approximately the temperature of the ambient air.
