Abstract
In the present paper, three 4-vortex configurations are investigated numerically with regard to their potential to reduce the rolling moment in the farfield. In a second step - as a kind of "inverse" design- the high-lift configurations of the DLR-ALVAST and DLR-F11 models are modified such that they produce vortex wakes close to the found optimal vortex systems. It is shown that simple design rules are sufficient for a successful modification. The realization of a priori defined wake topologies in the farfield is proven by 3D-Euler calculations of the wake vortex nearfield coupled to 2D-LES simulations of the vortex roll-up for the modified high-lift configurations.
