Abstract

The approach to couple an accurate Navier-Stokes solver with an empirical transition correlation and an extension of the turbulence model in the transition region is presented. The transition correlation is based on the parameter Re*/M and the one-equation turbulence model of Spalart and Allmaras is used. The validity of the coupled procedure is checked for hypersonic transition problems of 3D flows over deflected control surfaces where transition takes place within the interaction region of shock and boundary layer around the hinge line. The numerical computations reproduce the effect of transition on flap heating levels fairly well if appropriate numbers for the transition correlation are chosen to represent flow conditions in LaRC M=6 and DLR RWG wind tunnels.
